🔍 What Is Card Centering?
Card centering refers to how evenly the printed image is positioned within the card’s borders. If the image is slightly shifted to one side, top, or bottom, it affects not only the visual appeal but also the overall grade.
Centering plays a major role in determining your card’s condition and value — often being the difference between a Gem Mint 10 and a Near Mint 9.
Our new automated centering software takes the guesswork out of this process. It uses industry-standard measurement protocols and precision AI calibration to provide accurate, instant centering assessments every time.
⚙️ How Our Centering Software Works
Our system is built to perform like a professional grader — but faster, more precise, and completely objective. Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Border Detection and Measurement
Our software defines the card’s edges and measures border thickness from the very edge inward on all four sides:

Using a 10-point border system, the tool measures borders in 1mm increments, from point 1 at the outer edge to point 10 as it moves inward. Each line is digitally graduated for ultra-fine precision, allowing our system to identify even the smallest discrepancies invisible to the human eye.
Step 2: Automatic Card Type Detection
Every trading card is unique — and our AI knows that.
Our system automatically detects the type and dimensions of your card and adjusts the measurement parameters accordingly:

Standard Sports Cards (89mm x 64mm): Aligned to the outer border

Pokémon & MTG Cards (88mm x 63mm): Aligned to the inner border
This ensures perfectly accurate readings across every type of collectible, from vintage Topps to modern TCGs.
Step 3: Ratio Calculation
The AI then calculates two essential ratios:

Left-to-Right ratio

Top-to-Bottom ratio
Example: If your left border measures “4” and your right measures “3,” the ratio (4:3) translates to 57/43, equivalent to a Grade 9 in professional grading terms.
Typically, a 60/40 or better front ratio and 90/10 or better back ratio fall within the parameters needed for a grade of 9 or higher.
Step 4: Final Score Determination
For each side (front and back), the tool automatically identifies the lowest score between the two ratio measurements — ensuring the most accurate centering result possible.
So, if your card’s Left-to-Right ratio is 57/43 and the Top-to-Bottom ratio is 60/40, our system will report 60/40 as the overall measurement (using the lower score).
